License and how to credit

You may copy, share and adapt these files, including for commercial use, if you give credit and say whether you made changes. A suitable credit is: “History of Toronto, historyoftoronto.ca, licensed under CC BY 4.0”. The full terms are at creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0.

The license covers the selection, wording and structure of these files. It does not change the rights in the sources they summarize, such as Statistics Canada tables, Library and Archives Canada records or the Ontario Heritage Trust plaques. Each row links to the article on this site that gives the sources.

About the data

  • Every row comes from an article on this site and is checked against the sources named there.
  • Dates are given as stated in the sources. When sources disagree, the article explains the difference and the row uses the year only.
  • Population counts are as enumerated for the city in each census year, so they are not adjusted for boundary changes. The series breaks in 1991, when the figure changes to the amalgamated city.
  • Coordinates for places are approximate and meant for maps, not for surveys.
  • The files are UTF-8. The CSV files open in spreadsheet programs.

Use in research and software

The timeline, map, buildings index, street names and population chart are built from these same files. To report an error in a file, use the corrections policy.
