History of Toronto is an information website about the history of Toronto, Canada. This policy describes how its pages are prepared, what a reader can rely on, and what the site does not claim.
What the site covers
The site covers the history of Toronto and York County: the city’s early history, historic sites and buildings, neighbourhoods, institutions, people, and reference facts about the city. It does not give legal, medical, financial or immigration advice, and it does not publish listings for businesses.
How a page is prepared
- Each page is written from published sources. Archives, government bodies, libraries, museums and heritage organizations are used first: the City of Toronto Archives, Toronto Public Library, Library and Archives Canada, Archives of Ontario, Ontario Heritage Trust, Statistics Canada, Parks Canada and the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Encyclopedias and other secondary works are used where no primary source can be read, and the page says so.
- Pages are drafted with the help of automated research and writing tools and then checked against the sources named on the page. The sources are listed at the end of each article and gathered on the sources page.
- Where historians or official records disagree, the page shows each version and names the source of each, instead of choosing one without evidence.
- A statement that could not be verified is left out or worded in general terms.
- Figures such as population come with the census year and the source. Dates follow the style “Month D, YYYY”; metric units are given with imperial equivalents in brackets.
Last verified date
Articles that contain dates, figures or rules that can change end with a “Last verified” line giving the month and year when the facts were last compared with the named sources. It is not the date the event happened or the date of first publication.
Practical information
Opening hours, prices, schedules, by-law details and similar information change often. The site does not print them. Pages point to the operator’s or the government’s own page instead, and say so.
Transcribed historical texts
The pages under biographical sketches reproduce the text of an 1885 book as printed, including its spelling and its claims. They show what the book said about people living in the 1880s; they are not statements of fact by this site.
Advertising and independence
Advertising does not change article text. See advertising and sponsored links.
Corrections
Errors are corrected when found, and readers can report them. See the corrections policy.
