This calculator turns an age in a record into a birth year range. Enter the year of the record, the age it gives, and how the age was recorded. The answer is a range of one or two years, because a record that gives only an age cannot show whether the birthday had passed.
How ages were recorded
Most records, including the Canadian censuses from 1871 to 1921, give the age at the last birthday. The censuses of 1851 and 1861 asked for the age at the next birthday, according to the Library and Archives Canada pages on those censuses, so the birth year is one later than a last-birthday reading would give. The census finder lists the rule that each census used.
Cautions
Ages in old records were often rounded to a multiple of five or reported by a neighbor, and people sometimes gave different ages in different records. Treat the result as a place to start, then look for a baptism or birth record near that year with the records checklist.
