Working Out the Cost of Attending York University

The cost of attending York University in Toronto is the sum of tuition, supplementary fees, housing, food, transit, and personal costs, minus any aid. York publishes estimated tuition for the 2026 to 2027 academic year, charged per course, and a separate page with program-level fees. The steps below show how to put the pieces together.

Step one: tuition by program and status

York’s Future Students tuition page gives estimates for a full-time student in fall and winter 2026 to 2027, assuming 30 credits (five courses) per term. For most Arts and Sciences programs it lists about $6,200 for domestic students and $40,000 for international students (CAD). Business, Computer Science, Design, and Engineering are listed separately, and engineering is based on 36 credits in first year. Domestic and out-of-province tuition is listed as up 2 percent from 2025 to 2026. The page states that fees are charged per course, except for the Bachelor of Design, and that estimates may change.

Status matters. York says domestic fees apply to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, exempted international students, and their dependants, and international fees apply to everyone else, including visa students. The page also notes that out-of-province rates depend on the province of residence.

Step two: supplementary fees

Non-academic fees cover student levies, athletics and recreation, health and counselling, and other supports. The Future Students page says they are charged per credit and are typically $40 to $50, depending on faculty and program. Program-specific figures are on the Course and Program Fees page of Student Financial Services (students.yorku.ca/sfs/course-and-program-fees). That page could not be loaded for this article, so exact amounts for a given program should be read there.

Step three: living costs

Item (York 2026 to 2027 estimate) Residence Off-campus
Residence or apartment $9,000 to $13,000 (8-month rate for apartments) $12,000 or more
Meal plan or food $4,350 to $8,000 $4,800 (about $400 a month)
Personal $4,200 (about $350 a month) $5,400 (about $450 a month)
Health and dental $359 (international $1,151) $359 (international $1,151)

These are York’s own planning estimates in CAD. Actual rent in Toronto varies by area, and no market rent figure is used here. A personal-spending line is a place to be honest about discretionary items such as streaming, takeout, or an online site like Beteum Casino; whatever the amount, it belongs under wants, not needs.

Step four: getting to campus

The TTC offers a Post-Secondary Monthly Pass for students enrolled full-time in a degree or diploma program at a recognized post-secondary institution in Toronto, or at a registered private career college. Buying it requires a TTC Post-Secondary Photo ID Card and a PRESTO card. According to the TTC, single fares for students match adult fares, and the student pass is excluded from the new monthly fare capping. Prices and rules change, so the TTC fare-types page is the place to confirm them. Students who live outside the TTC area need to add other transit costs.

Step five: subtract aid

The Ontario Student Assistance Program, OSAP, helps eligible students pay for postsecondary school. The Ontario government page says online applications are open for the 2025 to 2026 and 2026 to 2027 school years, that first-time full-time applicants must complete an information module of about 15 minutes, and that an OSAP Aid Estimator shows roughly how much a student could receive. The page names the school’s Financial Aid Office and the National Student Loans Service Centre as places to ask questions. York scholarships and bursaries are listed on the university’s website and are not totaled here.
